Statement of the President Antonio Panzeri, on the case of journalist Zhang Zhan.
We believe that humanity owes Zhang Zhan, a Chinese journalist, more than enough recognition for making the world aware of the danger that was looming on the horizon; the coronavirus. Without this act of courage, we would all have paid a much higher tribute to the pandemic. In fact, its condemnation demonstrates and confirms all the reluctance of the Chinese government to provide the international institutions in charge with decisive information to quickly equip the necessary containment measures. The European Union should first of all show support and solidarity with Zhang Zhan and reflect seriously on the quality and effectiveness of its relations with China.

Crediamo che l'umanità, debba più di un riconoscimento alla giornalista cinese Zhang Zhan, per aver reso noto, al mondo intero, il pericolo che si stava profilando all'orizzonte; il coronavirus. Senza quest'atto di coraggio, avremmo tutti pagato un tributo assai più alto alla pandemia. Infatti, la sua condanna, dimostra e conferma, tutta la riluttanza del governo cinese nel fornire alle istituzioni internazionali preposte, informazioni decisive per attrezzare in tempi rapidi le necessarie misure di contenimento. L'Unione Europea, manifesti innanzitutto sostegno e solidarietà a Zhang Zhan e rifletta severamente sulla qualità e l'efficacia dei rapporti con la Cina.

Nous pensons que l'humanité doit à Zhang Zhan, journaliste chinois, une reconnaissance plus que suffisante pour avoir sensibilisé le monde au danger qui se profilait à l'horizon : le coronavirus. Sans cet acte de courage, nous aurions tous payé un plus lourd tribut à la pandémie. Sa condamnation démontre et confirme toute la réticence du gouvernement chinois à fournir aux institutions internationales les informations déterminantes pour mettre en oeuvre les mesures de confinement nécessaires. L'Union européenne devrait tout d'abord manifester son soutien et sa solidarité avec Zhang Zhan et réfléchir sérieusement à la qualité et à l'efficacité de ses relations avec la Chine.
